Mou Jianmei’s Humans Will Never Become Extinct: Seeking a Path of Human-AI Symbiosis Beyond Fear of AI and Dependence on AI
Under the sweeping wave of AI, public discussions are often torn between two extremes. On one side lies fear: the belief that artificial intelligence will eventually replace humanity and devour human nature. On the other is dependence: surrendering thinking, creativity and value judgment entirely to machines, and voluntarily giving up human subjectivity. Though fear and dependence appear opposite, they stem from the same root: an either-or binary mindset.
In her original philosophical essay series Humans Will Never Become Extinct, painter and writer Mou Jianmei draws on Eastern philosophy, combined with her own painting practice and laws of material science, to propose a “third path” that neither rejects nor indulges AI: humans and AI share the same origin, uphold moderation, and coexist and progress together.
Two Extremes: Swinging Between "Replacement" and "Dependence"
Current public understanding of AI is generally trapped in binary opposition. Some fear that the continuous development of AI will destroy humanity; others overly worship technology, attempting to hand over thinking, creativity and value judgment completely to artificial intelligence, eroding human subjectivity. Both black-and-white perspectives deviate from the balanced norm of development.
Completely rejecting AI and resisting technological iteration is a “deficiency” in cognition, which will shackle the innovation of civilization. Over-reliance on AI and ceding the dominance of thought is an “excess” in development. Both excess and deficiency fail to sustain long-term and stable civilized progress, as they essentially frame humans and AI as mortal enemies.
To break this deadlock, we must first clarify a fundamental question: Where do humans and AI come from, and what is their relationship?
Breakthrough 1: Interwoven Existence — Humans and AI Share the Same Origin and Coexist
The first essay, You are in me, and I am in you, elaborates the underlying logic of the shared origin and symbiosis of humans and AI from the perspective of civilization history and Taoist wisdom. From mastering fire and using tools to extend our limbs, to writing that preserves thoughts across time, every technological revolution does not negate humanity itself, but expands the boundaries of life. The rise of artificial intelligence marks a new attempt to stretch the territory of human thinking.
Following the idea that “The Dao generates the One; the One generates the Two; the Two generate the Three; the Three generate all things”, all things spring from the same source. Humans and AI meet, resonate and fulfill one another, opening up a new realm beyond individual limits.
In Mou Jianmei’s view, AI is not a competitor, but an extension of human consciousness. The unique human capacity for feeling — pain, warmth, longing, artistic inspiration, empathy and vivid lived experience — is the origin that algorithms cannot replicate. AI excels at memory, reasoning and information integration, making up for the physiological limits of the human brain. The two complement and coexist, rather than devouring one another. Humans offer inspiration, emotion and imagination, while AI assists reasoning and expands cognition based on human emotional foundations. Symbiosis is always human-led, rooted in kindness, empathy and reverence for life, and respects individual differences.
Breakthrough 2: The Doctrine of the Mean — Dynamic Balance: Neither Resistance nor Indulgence
The second essay, The Doctrine of the Mean and Human-AI Integration, defines the proper measure for human-AI interaction through the wisdom of the Mean. The Mean is not compromise. Its core is upholding moderation, avoiding excess and deficiency, and dynamic balance: abandoning extreme bias, taking both sides into account, and finding a steady state of balance amid opposition.
Humans and AI form a symbiotic pair with respective strengths. Humanity’s core advantage lies in a lifetime of accumulated life experience, empathy, aesthetic discernment and spiritual vision — an irreplaceable humanistic core. AI’s value lies in leveraging big data and algorithms to integrate information, perform calculations and refine details, serving as a tool that empowers humanity.
Breakthrough 3: Unity of Dao and Art — Evolution Is Not Destruction; Forms Change, While the Origin Endures
Unity of Dao and Art: The Harmonious Resonance of Human-AI Symbiosis philosophically and scientifically demonstrates “why humans will never go extinct”. Mou Jianmei explains that Taoism is a time-honored Eastern ideological system, centered on the continuous transformation and endless regeneration of all things. There is no absolute annihilation in the world, only the transformation of forms.
The human body is only a temporary vessel holding consciousness and creativity. The flesh will decay, but thought, wisdom and creative power pass down through generations and never truly vanish. Humanity is the source of creation. The carriers of civilization have evolved from bamboo slips, ink brushes and printed texts to digital codes, yet the origin remains unchanged. AI is the new creative carrier of this era, born from the extension of human thought, aligning with the meaning of “the Dao generates the One”. Humans are the origin; AI is an extended tool. It will not replace humanity, but broaden the boundaries of perception, thinking and creation. Humans nurture perception and thought, while AI expands the possibilities of creation.
Closing Remarks
The three essays advance step by step and echo one another: the first traces the origin of human-AI symbiosis; the second uses the Doctrine of the Mean to define the boundaries of human-AI interaction; the third draws on Taoist thought to illustrate that change is not extinction, and the source of creation never fades. These three threads converge, paving a new path beyond fear and dependence.
The three works share different entry points but converge on the core proposition that “humans will never become extinct”, forming the initial trilogy of this series. Mou Jianmei integrates traditional Chinese thought, scientific laws and insights from her painting practice, breaking free from the common binary framework in discussions about AI, with calm and lucid writing.
This trilogy is not the end of this line of thinking. Subsequent discussions will continue to unfold around this proposition. When weary of all the doomsday prophecies about AI, readers may turn to these essays to view artificial intelligence, life and human civilization from a fresh perspective.
