AI 替代机械化、流程化、工具性劳动,是新旧生产力矛盾斗争的必然过程;
人机之间,有对立、有博弈、有斗争、有阵痛,这是矛盾运动的客观必然;

The Human Race Will Never Go Extinct
On the Contradiction between Humans and Artificial Intelligence Based on the Law of the Unity of Opposites
Author: Jianmei Mu, painter and art theorist, creator of the series Humanity Will Never Go Extinct
Abstract: This essay belongs to the series Humanity Will Never Go Extinct. Based on the law of the unity of opposites in Marxist materialist dialectics and On Contradiction, it analyzes the game between humans and AI. Humans and AI carry both the struggle and the identity of contradiction. Opposition is real, yet it will not bring the destruction of civilization; it will eventually converge into unity at a higher dimension. The so‑called AI apocalypse is merely subjective panic arising from one‑sided exaggeration of the struggle of contradiction. Human civilization will endure through perpetual contradictory movement.
Keywords: Humanity Will Never Go Extinct, unity of opposites, On Contradiction, human‑AI game, perpetual civilization
Marxist materialist dialectics defines the law of the unity of opposites, also known as the law of contradiction, as the fundamental principle governing the movement, change and development of everything in the universe. This is also the core argument in Mao Zedong’s On Contradiction.
The survival and evolution of all things stem from the two-way movement of internal contradictions. Within every entity exist two inherent attributes: the struggle of mutually exclusive, conflicting forces, and the identity of interdependent, mutually reinforcing forces.
The identity of contradiction sustains the steady state of things, while the struggle pushes them forward. Without contradiction, there can be no movement; without contradiction, there can be no development.
For tens of thousands of years, human civilization has thrived and advanced. Essentially, it is a history of constant contradiction: opposition, contest, and eventual reunification. This serves as the core and foundational logic of this essay.
In the age of artificial intelligence, human civilization faces an unprecedented, widespread and profound collective anxiety. This widespread panic does not arise from the technology itself, but is an inevitable growing pain brought forth by the fierce movement of a brand-new human-AI contradiction.
Humans create, upgrade and empower AI — this represents the unifying side of the contradiction. Meanwhile, humans fear, suspect and seek to restrict AI — this represents the opposing side. These two forces, one constructive and one restrictive, together form the central contradiction of our AI era.
Beneath all the technical debates, doomsday predictions and civilizational worries, lies one ultimate question raised by this human-AI contradiction: Will AI turn against humanity?
This fear essentially comes from imagining that the struggle within this contradiction will spiral out of control. People dread that opposition between humans and AI will keep escalating, that contest will lead to destruction, and that conflict will overwrite coexistence, culminating in the extinction of human civilization.
Most people misunderstand the law of contradiction: they only see opposition while ignoring unification; they fixate on struggle while overlooking sublation. Grounded in the complete, rigorous law of the unity of opposites from Marxist materialist dialectics and Mao Zedong’s On Contradiction, and supported by evidence drawn from the entire history of human technology, we arrive at this transformative conclusion:
The opposition between humans and AI is real, and their contest will endure. Yet opposition does not equal annihilation; struggle will ultimately converge at a higher level of unity.
The idea that AI will destroy humanity, that technology will backfire and wipe out humankind, is merely subjective panic born from overemphasizing the struggle within contradiction. It violates the objective laws governing how contradictions operate.
Within the eternal movement of the unity of opposites, humanity will never go extinct.
I. The Identity of Contradiction: Human-AI Symbiosis as the Foundation for This Contradiction to Persist
As explained in On Contradiction, identity is the prerequisite for any contradiction to exist. Without interdependence, opposition itself cannot take shape.
Humans and AI have become an epoch-defining civilizational issue precisely because they share an inseparable identity: they rely on one another, support one another, with humans in the leading position and AI as the subordinate partner, coexisting and advancing side by side.
First, from the hierarchical relationship within this contradiction: humans hold the dominant position, and AI is subordinate.
AI is not a natural living being. It possesses no innate consciousness, independent desires or autonomous will. Its creation, iteration, operation and value all depend entirely on humans, the dominant party. Separated from humanity, AI becomes nothing more than invalid code, and the whole human‑AI contradiction collapses instantly. This primary‑secondary order, set by the identity of contradiction, cannot be reversed.
Second, from the perspective of mutual empowerment: the two sides bring out the best in each other and form a positive unifying dynamic.
Human beings develop, define and constrain AI, laying its foundation for existence. AI breaks through the limits of human physiology and cognition, assisting us in production, scientific research, artistic creation and governance, and pushing civilization forward.
This captures the core of this contradictory identity: humanity builds AI, and AI empowers humanity.
They are not natural enemies. They form one unified civilizational whole, with clear hierarchy, mutual dependence and mutual fulfillment.
II. The Struggle of Contradiction: Human Anxiety about AI Stems from a One‑Sided Misreading of Struggle
Marxist dialectics and On Contradiction make it clear: where there is unity, there will be opposition; where there is coexistence, there will be contest. Struggle is the internal driving force for all development. Today’s widespread anxiety toward AI originates from this very struggle: clashes between old and new models, tension between established orders and new possibilities, shifting boundaries of capability, and collisions with long‑held beliefs.
Yet most people fall into the same trap: they automatically equate struggle with mutual destruction, and opposition with the end of civilization. Struggle takes many forms: checks and balances, adjustment, negotiation, innovation and adaptation all count as struggle. Destructive confrontation is only an extremely rare exception, never the mainstream of contradictory movement.
We need On Contradiction to correct this misunderstanding.
All historical uprisings, subversions and revolutions took place between conscious beings with independent wills, demands and competing interests; these were two‑sided, voluntary contests.
This is not the case for human‑AI contradiction.
AI knows neither love nor hatred, greed nor ambition, and has no desire to seize power. It lacks the subjective agency to initiate confrontation. All tension in this human‑AI struggle grows out of humanity’s inner conflict and cognitive dissonance, rather than rebellion launched by AI itself.
We can use contradiction theory to unpack three intertwined internal conflicts within human beings:
The contradiction between creation and fear: humans crave the benefits brought by new technology while dreading its potential loss of control, nurturing it while restraining it. This is the most fundamental tension.
The contradiction between iteration and order: scientific research pursues unbounded exploration, while society demands stability and predictability. These two pulls persistently collide.
The contradiction between dignity and transcendence: humans have long regarded themselves as the most intelligent beings on Earth. AI’s superior computing power shakes this self-image and throws our sense of identity off balance.
It follows that the imagined threat of an AI rebellion is not an apocalyptic external battle between humans and machines, but an illusion projected outward from humanity’s tangled inner contradictions.
This is the quintessential one‑sided misreading of the struggle of contradiction.
III. Historical Precedents: Lessons from Past Technological Revolutions on Where This Contradiction Leads
The entire history of human technology is a living textbook of contradiction: new technologies clash with the old, struggle unfolds, outdated forms are sublated, and a new unity emerges. Every emerging technology once shook existing systems. In every case, obsolete paradigms faded away and civilization advanced. There has never been an instance where a creation destroyed its creator.
Case one: the contradiction of the steam engine revolution.
Identity: the steam engine was invented and operated by humans to serve industrialization, matching humanity’s developmental needs and acting as a tool to lift civilization to new heights.
Struggle: machine productivity crushed traditional handicraft labor, overturned established industries and jobs, sparking the Luddite movement. At that time, people panicked that machines would replace all workers, and fear reached a fever pitch.
Resolution: this struggle did not wipe out humanity. It eliminated backward handicraft modes, pushed institutions, industries and labor patterns to evolve, lifting the contradiction onto a higher plane.
Case two: the artistic revolution brought by photography.
Identity: the camera was invented by humans to record images and preserve moments, fulfilling our need to capture reality.
Struggle: its precise realism undermined traditional representational painting, threatening many painters’ livelihoods and plunging practitioners into despair. Old and new artistic forms clashed fiercely.
Resolution: photography stripped painting of its role as a mere recording device. Freed from this practical burden, painting turned toward spirit, aesthetics and intellectual expression, giving birth to modern art and elevating artistic civilization.
We may apply this historical pattern to AI today:
AI will replace repetitive, procedural and mechanical labor, which is inevitable as the contradiction between old and new productive forces unfolds.
But it can never replace human thought, feeling, lived experience and spiritual subjectivity. This is the uncrossable bottom line for human‑AI symbiosis.
All technological contradictions eventually discard what is obsolete, give rise to something new, and move forward through iteration. They do not lead to civilizational collapse.
IV. Distinguishing Principal and Secondary Contradictions: Recognizing the Real Crisis of the AI Age
This is one of the key methodologies in On Contradiction. Within complex systems exist principal contradictions and secondary contradictions. To grasp the truth, we must first tell them apart.
Within the human‑AI dynamic:
Secondary contradictions, the visible surface phenomena: AI outperforming humans in computation, job displacement, industrial disruption, technical vulnerabilities, disruptive speculation and doomsday theories. These capture public attention and are easily exaggerated.
The principal contradiction, the root force shaping the future: the clash between outdated mindsets and civilizational progress, between resistance to change and technological advancement, and between fear of transformation and the drive for perpetual renewal of civilization.
Materialist dialectics tells us that the trajectory of development is decided by the principal contradiction, not superficial secondary ones.
What truly endangers humanity’s long‑term survival is not AI, this external secondary contradiction. It is humanity’s internal refusal to let go of old ideas, fear of change, and resistance to renewal.
AI is merely an external condition for this contradiction. Humanity’s willingness to keep reinventing itself constitutes the fundamental internal cause for civilization to endure.
V. Conclusion: Returning to the Unity of Opposites — Contradictions Converge, and Humanity Will Never Go Extinct
This essay is reasoned and verified entirely through Marxist materialist dialectics and Mao Zedong’s On Contradiction.
Between humans and machines, opposition, contest, conflict and growing pains are inevitable outcomes of contradictory movement.
At the same time, they rely on each other, empower each other, and can thrive side by side. This is the long‑term trend of contradictory development.
Struggle breaks down stagnant old structures; identity builds new orders.
All the anxiety, conflict and friction stirred up by AI mark the collapse of an old steady state and the birth of a new one.
The fear that AI will rebel is only a short‑term impression amplified by conflict. Seen across the span of history, civilizational progress is the essential nature of contradictory movement.
Old contradictions fade, while new ones keep emerging. Through endless cycles of opposition, contest, sublation and reunification, human civilization renews itself and persists.
Every technological revolution is a shift of contradictions. Civilization survives precisely because of the gifts brought by the unity of opposites.
When rigid beliefs and outdated systems cannot keep pace with the times, fierce collisions will occur between old and new, clearing the way for renewal.
And as contradiction moves onward, we arrive at a deeper truth of materialist dialectics: destruction precedes rebirth.
